River banks are affected by both slope instabilities and erosion processes due to the stream water drag forces. Soil and water bioengineering uses different strategies to protect riparian soils by both reinforcing and protecting the riverbanks.
Coastal areas are under constant pressure from erosion processes. Soil and water bioengineering can mitigate these hazards by using the protective features of well developed plant communities.
Slopes can be affected by instability processes. Soil bioengineering offers solutions for stabilizing the soil by taking advantage of plant root system beneficial effects. Roots bind with the soil and can provide both an additional cohesion and an increase in the overall soil shear strength.
